UNC Charlotte Student First Case Of Omicron In North Carolina

An unidentified student at UNC Charlotte returned from a Thanksgiving visit in an undisclosed location out of state and tested positive for the omicron COVID variant. The first documented omicron case in North Carolina. The student was quarantined and has recovered. The student was vaccinated and experienced mild symptoms.

Dr. David Wohl, infectious disease specialist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, said the omicron case was not surprising and was predicted. He said there is likely more cases yet to be reported. The more pressing concern, according to Dr. Wohl, was not omicron cases but rather those unvaccinated overloading hospitals.
