Suspect Arrested In “Unsolved” Murder Of UNC Student
Chapel Hill Police arrested a suspect in the murder of UNC sophomore Faith Hedgepeth—nine years after she was beaten to death in an off-campus apartment.
N.C. Attorney General Josh Stein said DNA evidence helped identify Miguel Enrique Salguero-Olivares when a match was confirmed from DNA collected at the crime scene.
Hedgepeth was a member of the Haliwa-Saponi tribal community. Durham County District Attorney Satana Deberry said her murder pointed to the “devastating reality of violence against Indigenous women,” and pointed out in some Indigenous communities the murder rates of women are 10 times higher than the national average.
