Duke Performances Presents Rissi Palmer October 6
Rissi Palmer’s self-termed “Southern Soul,” a sound interweaving R&B, gospel, and country, launched her into the mainstream as the first Black woman to chart a country song (2007’s “Country Girl”) since 1987. Her trailblazing trajectory since has centered a counter-history of country music, both in her own recordings – Revival, her 2019 album, is her most poignant personal-political statement to date – and her stewardship of the genre through Color Me Country, an Apple Music radio show focused on the Black, Indigenous, and Latinx histories of country music.
