Protesters And Police Clash As UNC Chapel Hill Votes Tenure For 1619 Project Founder Nikole Hannah-Jones

Demonstrators were removed from a UNC-Chapel Hill trustees meeting as the board prepared to discuss and vote on tenure for 1619 Project founder Nikole Hannah-Jones. Students protested outside, chanting, “No Justice! No Peace.”

Hannah-Jones tweeted, “It should have been communicated how this meeting would go, that tenure proceedings are always held in closed session, and an attempt made to de-escalate. Instead Black students were shoved and punched because they were confused about the process. This is not right.” The UNC Student Body President Lamar Richards contacted representatives of the protesters and explained why the tenure discussion was not held in public which helped put the protesters more at ease.

The UNC Board of Trustees voted to grant tenure to Hannah-Jones.
