Queens University And Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital Partner To Support Child Cancer Patients
On January 28, 2026, Curry Arena, located in the Levine Center for Health and Wellness, transformed into a hub of hope and resilience as the Queens community gathered for the Coaches vs. Cancer game. Royals coaches and staff partnered with Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital to raise awareness and support for pediatric cancer patients.
The highlight of the evening wasn’t found on the scoreboard, but on the feet of the Royals’ coaching staff. Each coach wore custom-designed sneakers featuring vibrant artwork created by patients at Levine Children’s Hospital. By wearing designs created by the children undergoing treatment, the university aimed to bridge the gap between collegiate athletics and the brave battles fought daily just a few miles away.
“The sneakers worn by our coaches represent the strength, creativity, and resilience of children at Levine Children’s Hospital,” said Cherie Swarthout, director of athletics at Queens University of Charlotte. “We’re proud to partner with Atrium Health to elevate their voices and bring our community together for a greater cause.”
Art as a Form of Healing
For the patients at Levine Children’s, the opportunity to design the footwear provided a creative outlet and a sense of connection to the team. The project was facilitated by the hospital’s Integrative Healing & Therapies Team, which uses art and expression to improve the patient experience.
“The Queens University Coaches vs. Cancer game is about so much more than basketball; it’s also about lifting up our patients at Levine Children’s Hospital,” said Sarah Frantz, CCLS, events & donation coordinator at Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital. “We’re incredibly grateful to Queens University for empowering our patients to express themselves and showcase their personality through designing these custom shoes. Giving our patients the chance to come together, create, and support one another through art is so meaningful. Seeing their artwork brought to life on the court will be a winning moment our patients will never forget!”
More Than a Game
The atmosphere in Curry Arena was electric, with fans and students joining in the tribute. For Coach Grant Leonard and the Men’s Basketball team, the event served as a grounding reminder of the program’s core values.
“We’re really intentional about building community through basketball, and I’m so glad that we could join Atrium in celebrating and honoring the kids at Levine Children’s Hospital,” said Coach Leonard. “Playing in the Levine Center is a constant reminder of the incredible generosity the Levine family shows this city. Their impact is truly unbelievable.”
As the season continues, the impact of these custom sneakers and the stories of the children who inspired them will be a reminder to the Queens community and beyond to keep up the fight against cancer.
